According to a comprehensive survey conducted among a sample of 1,000 students, a staggering 97% of them are contemplating various alternative pathways instead of sticking to the traditional route of securing a job related to their major. This indicates a notable shift in the mindset and aspirations of the upcoming workforce, who are seeking unconventional routes to achieve their goals.
Waste Management CEO Jim Fish says, “We can’t hire a truck driver to drive a trash truck for $90,000 in Houston, Texas, but I can hire an M.B.A. from a small school for $60,000, and I can get them all day long.” “The world seems to have flipped on its head,” he continues.
According to the latest data available, the unemployment rate for college graduates between the ages of 20 and 24 surged to 4.6% in February, representing a doubling of the 2.3% reported in December 2021. This significant leap in unemployment rates highlights the intensified competition that college seniors will now face in the job market.
With the possibility of a recession in the near future, it looks like it will become increasingly more difficult for college graduates to find a job. However, there are a few things college students can do now to help them in the future. Students can apply to internships, network, and work temporary jobs to gain experience.
