Coffee or Tea?

If you are trying to figure out what kind of drink you should have in the morning to increase your productivity, you are not alone. Americans drink about 400 million cups of coffee and 159 million cups of tea every day. Have you ever wondered which one is better for your overall productivity, coffee or tea?

It is common knowledge that in America, the go-to drink in the morning is coffee. I am sure we all grew up seeing our parents go through 2-3 cups of coffee in the morning before they even got ready to leave for work. Also, with the emergence of companies like Dunkin and Starbucks, we can’t go 20 minutes of driving without seeing a coffee shop.

With over 8,500 Dunkin Donuts and close to 6,300 Starbucks in America alone, our lives have been surrounded around coffee since birth. However, when it comes to global consumption, Tea is only second to packaged water. Worldwide, there are 25,000 cups of tea consumed every second, which is about 2.2 billion cups per day… By far, tea is consumed more worldwide than coffee.

Overall, tea takes the cake for being the most popular around the world. However, is tea better for productivity or just more popular because of its flavor? Let’s discuss which one is better for productivity, coffee or tea.

tea versus coffee

Coffee and Productivity

Increased Energy

When it comes to waking up in the morning, most of us need to have at least one cup of coffee before we get the day started. With close to 100mg of caffeine per serving, coffee has more than double the amount of caffeine as tea. After consuming 100mg of caffeine, you will get an almost immediate burst of energy, which will result in increased alertness and less fatigue.

Coffee and productivity go hand in hand. In fact, according to a study done by Southern Illinois University, caffeine has been shown to improve performance on the following tasks:

  • Information processing
  • Response time
  • Vigilance
  • Proofreading
  • Logical reasoning

Since the popularity of caffeine in the past couple of years, we have seen energy drink companies become more popular, resulting in more and more people craving caffeine. However, sometimes having too much caffeine can have negative effects.

Increased Anxiety

Unfortunately, caffeine in coffee isn’t always great. Because of the 100mg of caffeine in coffee, some people will feel increased anxiety and headaches after drinking a cup. The main reason for this is because caffeine dehydrates you, as a result causing a headache. If you are used to drinking 2 to 3 cups of coffee a day, you may have headaches more often than those who consume less.

After the initial caffeine effect is lost, most individuals feel tired and less focused. Coffee has almost double the amount of caffeine than tea, making it better short-term, but also increases the chance of crashing. Also, if you do become dehydrated with caffeine, then you will

Worse Sleep

Lastly, coffee can affect our sleep. Science has shown that sleep is essential to our health and longevity. Sleep is the body’s time to restore itself and allow for growth. When you drink coffee, your sleep patterns will become abnormal.

Many coffee drinkers take longer to fall asleep compared to those who avoid caffeine. Ways to prevent this are to drink coffee earlier in the morning and avoid drinking multiple cups a day.

Tea and Productivity

Less Caffeine

Which one has more caffeine, coffee or tea? At first you may think that the more caffeine you consume the better it is for your productivity, but that is not true. Tea has about half the amount of caffeine as coffee does, but still boosts productivity similarly. Also, depending on the type of tea, you can get 70% less caffeine per cup compared to coffee.

The benefits of less caffeine is you will no longer have the “caffeine crash” you would usually have with a cup of coffee, or if you do, it is minimal. Also, the less caffeine you consume, the less dehydrated you will get, resulting in fewer or no headaches.

If you want a drink that will help your get through the entire day, tea is the better option.

Improved Memory

Many studies have suggested that tea can improve cognitive functions, especially in working memory.

“The researchers saw enhanced connectivity between the parietal and frontal cortex of the brain, meaning that green tea may increase your ability to learn and remember data.” – Medium

I am sure we all can use a little extra bit of memory nowadays.

Stress-Relief & Better Sleep

One cup of tea compared to one cup of coffee has significant differences. One cup of tea will reduce stress and help you have a night of better sleep, while one cup of coffee will increase anxiety and cause abnormal sleeping patterns.tea winner

In fact, researchers have found that tea drinkers fell asleep quicker and for longer compared to coffee drinkers. If you are a coffee drinker, are you having troubles sleeping?

Now that you know the difference between the two, you may want to reconsider what you drink in the morning. Not only does tea have more health benefits, but it also improves memory, alertness, and much more. Is it time to switch? Which one will you drink from now on, coffee or tea? Even though coffee and productivity go together, tea is the better option!
