Are you tired of spending your precious weekends on constant reorganization? It turns out, starting off organized can save you more time than you think!

Placing items where they belong can reclaim hours of your life. According to the National Association of Professional Organizers (NAPO), the average person spends a whole year searching for misplaced items.

Feeling overwhelmed by clutter? From mounting papers to chaotic desks and overflowing inboxes, it might be time to level up your organizational game. 

Employers highly value organizational skills, yet many struggle to stay as tidy as they’d like. If you’re part of the 67% of people who say that they would save up to 30 minutes daily through better organization, here are six tips to enhance your organizational skills.

Make a List

There are many things that need to get done each day, from big projects and long-term goals to smaller tasks and daily chores. Regardless of their scope and scale, it is essential to keep track of everything that needs to get done to make the most of our time and energy and to improve your organizational skills.

The first step is to write down all your daily tasks. This might include errands that need running, chores around the house, and work-related tasks. You should then sort these items into different categories based on their relative importance and urgency. 

For example, I schedule my most important tasks in the morning for when I am the most productive. I put less pressing but time-sensitive tasks into the afternoon section of my planner so that they don’t get pushed aside by more urgent things during the busy middle part of my day. Finally, I leave the least time-sensitive tasks for the end of the day.

By preparing your schedule like this, no matter what time of day it is, you will always have a clear idea of what tasks are the most urgent and what can wait until later. By giving yourself focused blocks of time throughout the day to tackle different tasks, you can prioritize and get all my necessary tasks done.

Also, creating a check list will help you stay motivated. When you start seeing check marks next to all the tasks you completed that day, your brain releases a load of dopamine, which will improve your mental health and motivate you to continue to complete tasks.

Manage Your Time Well

Work smarter, not harder. I’m sure you’ve heard this saying before, but it’s worth repeating. After all, time management is crucial to success. Just think about it – if you spend your mornings hopping from one easy task to the next, you’ll probably find yourself feeling bogged down by the afternoon.

On the other hand, if you start your day by tackling the most important tasks on your list, you’ll be amazed at how much more productive you are. Save your tedious tasks for later on in the day when you are ‘going through the motions.’

Also, it is tempting to try and pack your schedule full to the brim with tasks, especially when you are trying to advance your career or meet other important goals. However, doing so can be a recipe for disaster. If you have too many things scheduled back-to-back, you will not have any flexibility in your day to deal with unexpected tasks that may arise. 

Unexpected tasks can range from sudden meetings with clients or coworkers to household chores or family responsibilities. Rather than adding too many items to your schedule, it is better to leave some open space to deal with these other commitments. This will allow you the flexibility and peace of mind needed to navigate life’s curveballs and ensure that all of your priorities get the attention they deserve. 

In the end, a more manageable and balanced schedule will likely to give you better results than one that is wildly overscheduled. Resist the temptation to load up your calendar as much as possible – it will only lead to frustration later on! Unexpected tasks may also require you to delay some other tasks you have for the day, another reason for leaving your not-so-urgent tasks to the end of your day if another important task arises.

Take Control of Your Email Inbox

In today’s world, it’s easy to get caught up in the constant inundation of emails, texts, and other notifications. It can be challenging to keep up with everything, and often we can miss important emails because our inboxes are full of junk mail.

One way to help alleviate this issue is to unsubscribe from any mailing lists that you cannot keep up with. This will help declutter your inbox and give you more time to focus on more important emails.

Additionally, if you find yourself constantly needing to check your email throughout the day, try setting aside specific times when you send and check your emails. This way, you won’t miss anything important, and you’ll be able to focus on other tasks without constantly getting interrupted.

Also, how often do you need to go back into your email and find emails sent to you one year ago? Usually, not often, if ever. If your inbox is full of emails sent to you from five years ago, it may be time to go through and delete your old emails.

There is a simple trick to delete all your old emails with just the click of a button. Login to your Gmail account, type into the search bar, “in: inbox before:01/01/2018,” and hit enter.

Typing this into your search bar will locate all emails you received before 01/01/2018 (or whatever date you chose). To delete all these old emails, select all the emails on page 1 and click “Select all conversations that match this search.” Once selected, you can now click the trash can or archive!

Cleaning your email inbox is the most helpful way to improve your organizational skills in my opinion.

Keep Your Documents Organized

Any business owner will tell you that organization is the key to success. When they refer to organization, they aren’t referring to a company or business, but the action of organizing something. Having a system in place for tracking inventory, client information, and financial records is essential for keeping things running smoothly. The same principle applies to documents. 

Whether it’s a contract, invoice, or tax return, every company has paperwork that needs to be kept on file. While it may seem like a hassle to keep everything organized, it’s worth the effort. Having all of your company’s documents in one place will save you time and stress when you need to find something. So take the time to create a system that works for you, and you’ll be glad you did.

Not only does organizing your documents help you at work, but it can also help you in your personal life.

Keeping your bills, receipts, and warranties organized is crucial for minimizing the stress and hassle of tax season or dealing with a broken appliance. When everything is neatly filed away in clearly labeled folders, it will be easier to find the information you need quickly and efficiently. 

For example, if an appliance in your home breaks down, having the warranty information readily available will allow you to resolve the problem quicker and easier. Additionally, having all your bills organized from previous months will make tax time much less hectic, as you won’t have to spend hours digging through old paperwork trying to track down all your records.

If you want to save yourself time and money in the long run, make sure that you stay on top of your financial responsibilities by staying organized. It will be well worth it!

Use Calendars and Planners

If you’re like most people, your days are busy. Between work, family, travel, and social obligations, it can be tough to find time for everything. That’s why it’s important to review your work calendar daily. By taking a few minutes each day to check your schedule, you can avoid conflicts with other activities. And if you do have a conflict, you’ll be able to better plan around it. 

For example, let’s say you’re invited to a friend’s birthday party on the same night as an important work meeting. If you review your work calendar in advance, you’ll be able to reschedule the meeting or decline the invitation. However, if you don’t check your calendar, you may end up double-booked and unable to attend either event. So take the time to review your work calendar every day. It will save you time and headaches in the long run.

I am sure almost all of you have calendars, but you need to be diligent about adding everything to it to avoid schedule conflicts.

Reduce Clutter

To be truly productive at work, it is essential to have a clean and organized workspace. Not only does clutter inhibit your ability to focus and find important documents, but it also makes you more likely to experience stress and less motivation. 

To reduce clutter, it is important to take some time each week (or even daily) for a bit of cleaning and organizing. This might mean throwing out expired documents or outdated reminders or simply clearing off your desk of any unnecessary papers or knick-knacks. 

Once you have cleared out the clutter, be sure to maintain your space by spending a few minutes each day making sure it stays free of messes. By investing this small amount of time each day, you will cultivate a clean and productive workspace that will help set you up for success in all areas of your life.
